For the first time, the newly set up brigade of Lithuania exercises as a fighting alliance with hundreds of soldiers of the eastern flank. It looks quite good – if only the Norwegians were not.
Around 2,900 soldiers are practicing the defense of NATO's eastern flank in Lithuania during the "Freedom Shield" exercise – not far from the border with Belarus. Defense Minister Pistorius is visiting today, as the German Armed Forces are providing the majority of the troops.
The preparation of the necessary infrastructure in Lithuania is progressing ahead of schedule.
The construction of the Bundeswehr brigade in Lithuania is faster than planned. Boris Pistorius does not rule out the obligation of soldiers to serve in Lithuania.
Thousands of soldiers from the Bundeswehr are to be stationed in Lithuania by 2027, a good third are already there. Now the Panzerbrigade is practicing for the first time – and is getting a prominent visit.
In order to protect the eastern flank, almost 5000 Bundeswehr soldiers are to be permanently stationed in Lithuania.
