West Bengal Elections Results 2026: Rahul Gandhi Backs Mamata Banerjee's Claims, Says '100 Seats Were Stolen'
Rahul Gandhi echoed Mamata Banerjee’s vote-rigging claims, saying the BJP and Election Commission undermined democracy after the opposition suffered heavy losses.
On Monday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee alleged the Bharatiya Janata Party manipulated assembly elections in Assam and West Bengal, describing the outcome as "mandate theft."
Vote counting on Monday delivered the BJP 206 seats in West Bengal's 294-member Assembly, prompting Gandhi to allege similar patterns in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls and elections in Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, and Maharashtra.
Claiming CCTV cameras were switched off and her party's agents denied entry at counting centres, Banerjee alleged the BJP "looted" more than 100 seats and that she was physically assaulted.
Multiple opposition figures including MP Kapil Sibal and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav joined the criticism, with Sibal stating "this election was stolen not won" and Yadav calling results a "black day."
Political observers warn the intensifying confrontation between Congress and BJP will further deepen divisions in India's institutional landscape, as Gandhi frames the dispute as a national democratic concern rather than party rivalry.
