LG Display unveils FLiPP, achieving dream next-generation OLED
The new process raises brightness 1.6 times, extends lifespan 2.4 times and cuts power use 13%, LG Display said.
On Wednesday, August 19, 2026, LG Display unveiled FLiPP at the International Meeting on Information Display 2026 in Busan, introducing a breakthrough OLED manufacturing process that eliminates conventional fine metal mask technology.
Conventional FMM processes require expensive metal plates that sag under their own weight, causing misalignment and color-mixing defects, prompting LG Display to develop FLiPP using photolithography to pattern RGB pixels without metal masks.
Compared to standard FMM panels, FLiPP increases brightness 1.6 times, extends lifespan 2.4 times, and reduces power consumption by 13%. LG Display CTO Choi Young-seok called the process a 'dream technology.'
The manufacturing process boosts mother-glass utilization by up to 64 percent, making LG Display the first company to produce FMM-less OLEDs using 8.5th-generation mother glass as a single whole piece.
At the same event, LG Display's Hyper Double Scanning technology won the IMID 'Display of the Year Award,' while Samsung Display showcased its own foldable 7.6-inch and 20-inch stretchable display innovations.
