South Carolina 17-Year-Old Charged with Planning His Own Kidnapping
Investigators say Gardner conspired with two other males in a staged abduction that triggered a region-wide search and multiple felony charges.
On Wednesday, Lexington Police charged 17-year-old Sama'j Corvin Gardner after determining he conspired to stage his own kidnapping from his Hendrix Street home. Authorities announced the incident, which initially triggered a region-wide search, was a fabricated abduction.
Police initially responded to reports that Gardner was abducted at gunpoint by two armed males on Sunday, May 3. The intruders allegedly threatened to kill several family members, ranging in age from 12 to 61, during the break-in.
Authorities arrested a 16-year-old juvenile male in connection with the case while searching for a third unidentified suspect. Both face multiple felony charges, including six counts of kidnapping, first-degree burglary, and assault and battery.
Gardner, charged as an adult, was denied bond and remains in Lexington County Detention Center. The 16-year-old is held in South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice custody, awaiting a bond hearing.
The FBI and Lexington County Sheriff's Department continue investigating the conspiracy as authorities search for the third male suspect. Anyone with information may contact Detective Corporal Kenneth Heath at 803-358-1557 or call Midlands Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
