Lebanon, Israel Agree on Shortlist of Countries to Verify Hezbollah Disarmament
The United States will choose from the list as talks continue on a third-party role in Hezbollah’s disarmament and Israeli troop withdrawals.
Lebanon and Israel agreed on Friday to a shortlist of countries that could deploy troops to verify Hezbollah's disarmament under a United States-brokered agreement, with Washington due to select nations from the list.
The agreement links Israel's phased withdrawal from Lebanon to the disarmament of Hezbollah, requiring independent verification by a third party under a June 26 deal framework.
Lebanon and Israel rejected private security firms for the verification role; previous reports indicate the United States and Israel vetoed France from the potential actors list.
The United States will select troop-contributing nations from the list, though a Lebanese official noted the process requires a new Security Council resolution to proceed.
Negotiators must still determine force size and how troops would cooperate with the Lebanese army, with the next round of talks set for early September.
