LAWSUIT FILED: EXPEDIA/VRBO RENTS THOUSANDS OF PROPERTIES THAT VIOLATE ITS OWN FIRE-SAFETY RULES. DOMINICAN RENTAL FIRE KILLS 4 FROM MASSACHUSETTS FAMILY; SUIT ALLEGES SYSTEMIC PLATFORM FAILURE
Families from Massachusetts filed a civil lawsuit in King County Superior Court against Expedia and related companies after a deadly vacation-rental fire in Barahona, Dominican Republic.
The fire occurred early on June 13, 2026, killing four people, including a five-year-old child, while severely injuring other family members.
The complaint alleges that the companies promoted rentals as safe but failed to enforce instructions requiring hardwired, interconnected smoke detectors near bedrooms and sleeping areas.
The lawsuit alleges that VRBO continued listing thousands of properties known to lack smoke detectors without meaningful warnings for travelers.
