Laura Poitras tells us that she decided to make her new film after watching a 10-second video on the Internet in which an idyllic winter print composed of snowy trees appeared juxtaposed with the sound of the screams: “Stay inside! Close the doors! They are here!” Faced with those images, she recalls, the acclaimed filmmaker felt that “the monsters were invisible, but the voices described a very real horror.”
