Ladakh earthquake: 5.5-magnitude quake jolts Leh early Thursday
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10 km and was followed by a second tremor within four hours, officials said.
Early Thursday, a 5.5 magnitude earthquake struck Leh, Ladakh, at 6:05 am IST, the National Centre for Seismology confirmed. The tremor occurred at a depth of 10 km, with damage reports currently awaited.
A second earthquake measuring 4.3 magnitude hit Leh at 9:54 am, triggering panic among locals. Shallow earthquakes are frequent in Ladakh; a similar 5.7 magnitude event struck in January at a depth of 171 km beneath the Earth's surface.
Tourism in Ladakh recorded 3,30,332 arrivals from January to July this year, reaching more than 98 per cent of the entire 2025 footfall. The July arrivals comprised 95,416 domestic and 9,630 foreign tourists, marking significant growth.
Back-to-Back tremors triggered widespread concern, with many residents using Twitter to express concerns about the seismic activity. Authorities confirmed no damage or casualties have been reported as of now.
Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena credited Modi's appeal to explore the country for the tourism surge, which saw 56.15 per cent growth in July compared to 2025. Ladakh remains a preferable destination for tourists despite the seismic activity.
