'La Bola Negra' teaser introduces Netflix's Spanish LGBTQ drama
The Spanish-language queer drama spans three eras and won Best Director at Cannes before Netflix’s U.S. rollout.
- On Tuesday, Netflix released the official U.S. trailer for La Bola Negra, a sprawling historical drama from Spanish filmmaking duo Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, known as Los Javis, featuring singer-songwriter Guitarricadelafuente in his acting debut.
- Drawing on Federico García Lorca's unfinished work and Alberto Conejero's play La Piedra Oscura, the film explores themes of freedom, legacy, and LGBTQ visibility across 1932, 1937, and 2017.
- Featuring Penelope Cruz and Glenn Close, the 155-minute drama earned Calvo and Ambrossi the Best Director Award at the Cannes Film Festival in May, following a 20-minute standing ovation.
- Netflix secured U.S. rights in a competitive bidding war, scheduling a theatrical release for October 16 followed by a December 2 streaming debut—marking the platform's longest theatrical window to date.
- "With this film, the central question is what we do with our past, our inheritance," Calvo told Netflix, as the production honors generations whose sacrifice secured today's freedoms.
