Better Air Quality, Reopened Roads as Crews Contain Miami-Dade Fires
Officials reopened major roads as three wildfires kept burning, with the largest blaze 97% contained and six people plus a cat still in shelter.
- On Sunday, officials reopened major roadways including Krome Avenue and the Florida Turnpike as crews regained control of brush fires in West Miami-Dade that burned over 20,000 acres in the last week.
- Lightning strikes on June 14 ignited the initial blazes, which split into the Quarry 2 Fire, the Wells Fire, and the Coptic Fire, burning nearly 19,000 acres and 6,000 acres respectively.
- Firefighters achieved significant progress, with the Quarry Fire reaching 97% containment, the Well Fire at 75%, and the Coptic Fire at 60%, enabling more than 200 evacuees to return home.
- Air quality alerts expired Sunday morning as conditions improved tremendously, according to National Weather Service Miami meteorologist Robert Molleda, who noted continued monitoring remains necessary.
- With dry conditions persisting, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue official Erika Benitez urged residents to "avoid burning any yard debris" and "never throw cigarettes out of your vehicle" to prevent further fires.
