Kremlin hails election of nearly 50 Ukraine war veterans to Russian parliament
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the veterans’ experience is in demand, as 41 of the winners represent United Russia, officials said.
- The Kremlin hailed the election of 46 veterans of the war in Ukraine to the 450-seat State Duma, saying they would be heavily involved in the lawmaking process.
- President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that the election's nearly 60% turnout showed Russians support their armed forces fighting in Ukraine and the authorities' efforts to protect national security.
- The Central Election Commission reported that United Russia secured 349 seats, followed by the Communist party with 37, the LDPR with 23, New People with 19, Just Russia with 17, Motherland with one, and Four unaffiliated candidates.
- In a tightly controlled political system critics argue stifles dissent, most anti-war candidates were barred from running; those who participated won no seats, though the liberal Yabloko party secured a regional parliament foothold.
- Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the veterans' experience is in "high demand" and each will make a significant contribution to shaping various initiatives.
