Teen Refused Bail After BMW Ploughs Into 10 Knights Fans
Police say the 18-year-old driver was refused bail after 10 people were injured, including two children in critical condition.
On Saturday, an 18-year-old driver in a BMW crashed into a crowd of Newcastle Knights fans at a Wallsend roundabout, injuring 10 people. Police charged Indika Bambrick Samarasinghe with nine offences, including dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm.
Hundreds of fans had lined the roadside to farewell the Knights team bus as it traveled to Sydney for the NRL grand final, following a joyous week celebrating the team's first premiership appearance in 25 years.
Ten people were treated at the scene, with two initially critically injured. A five-year-old girl remains in a stable condition at John Hunter Hospital after being placed in an induced coma, while a 67-year-old man continues recovery in serious but stable condition.
Samarasinghe was refused police bail and is due to face Newcastle Local Court on Sunday. Community fundraising efforts have surged, with multiple GoFundMe pages raising more than $29,000 to assist injured victims with medical costs and recovery.
Newcastle Lord Mayor Gavin Morris called the crash a 'complete shock' to the city, urging residents to remain united. Knights captain Kalyn Ponga and teammates flooded social media with messages of support, emphasizing the community's strength and compassion.
