Ex-Tottenham Hotspur Owner’s Art Collection Could Raise over $204 Million at Auction
Billionaire Joe Lewis and his daughter, Vivienne Lewis, will auction their modern art collection at Sotheby's in London next month, with the sale expected to fetch more than $204 million.
Sotheby's Europe chairman Oliver Barker called the sale a "full-circle moment," as Lewis's passion for figuration began in post-war London, ignited by School of London artists Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud.
Highlights include Gustav Klimt's 1902 portrait of Gertrud Loew, estimated at up to $41 million, alongside Egon Schiele's Danaë and Amedeo Modigliani's Homme à la pipe, both potentially fetching up to $25 million.
Many works have not appeared on the open market for decades, according to Sotheby's, and will be displayed at the auction house's New York headquarters from this weekend through May 18.
Experts suggest the sale reflects the art market's dependence on single-owner collections, which mask a thinner underlying market, though more collections are expected as generational wealth transfers accelerate.
