Kingdom Come: Deliverance Dev Says 'Everybody's Scared' to Raise the Price of Video Games, but Hopes GTA 6 Will 'Blaze the Trail'
Martin Klima said GTA 6’s $80 standard edition could help publishers justify higher prices as development costs and layoffs strain the industry.
Warhorse Studios co-founder Martin Klima recently said he hopes Grand Theft Auto will "blaze a trail" to higher game prices, arguing the shift is necessary for the industry to survive.
Rising development costs and stalled audience growth have left studios facing an existential crisis, prompting Klima to argue that companies must increase unit prices to support modern production.
Standard Edition copies of Grand Theft Auto cost $80, a $10 jump from the previous $60 to $70 standard, while The Ultimate Edition includes additional content for $100.
Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick defended the pricing strategy, stating "Consumers pay for the value that you bring to them," while analysts predict the game will generate $5.2 billion in launch week sales.
Most companies remain too nervous to raise prices, according to Klima, who admitted the Grand Theft Auto franchise "doesn't appeal to me at all" but expects the industry to monitor how it performs.
