China’s Xi Urges ‘Diplomatic’ Mideast Solution in Talks with Jordan’s King
Xi called for a comprehensive ceasefire and a two-state solution as China signed agreements with Jordan on diplomacy, trade and supply chains.
On Monday, Chinese President Xi Jinping told King Abdullah that China values Jordan's "unique and important role in the region" while urging a "diplomatic" solution to the Middle East crisis.
As a US-allied kingdom, Jordan navigates the fallout of the months-long conflict between Washington and Tehran, which has squeezed its tourism and trade-dependent economy.
The two leaders signed several agreements on diplomacy, trade, and supply chains, issuing a joint statement calling for normal navigation to be restored through the Strait of Hormuz.
Regarding the Palestinian issue, China supports "promoting the resumption of Israeli-Palestinian peace talks anchored on the correct direction of the 'two-state solution'," Xi said.
The European Union faces significant economic impact, with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen noting in April that higher energy costs were costing the bloc €500 million daily.
