Keralam local body bypolls: UDF retains Ayyappankkavu in Kochi Corporation
Ajith Kumar A.K. won his first election with 1,492 votes, as the UDF restored its strength to 48 in the 76-member Kochi Corporation council.
- On Tuesday, the United Democratic Front retained the Ayyappankkavu division of the Kochi Corporation as debutant Ajith Kumar A.K., 77, defeated CPI candidate P.K. Usman by 549 votes.
- Counting began for 38 wards across 12 districts in Kerala's first local body by-elections since the UDF government came to power four months ago.
- In Ernakulam district, the UDF won two of four wards, while the Left Democratic Front and Twenty20 Party each retained one seat; Ajith Kumar garnered 1,492 votes against Usman's 943.
- Twenty20 Party retained Kolenchery East ward with 339 votes, while the LDF held Puliyanam South as Sugandhi Joshy won with 575 votes.
- Campaigns featured the KSRTC Priyadarshini free travel scheme and 'Operation Toofan' anti-narcotics drive, while the LDF attacked the government over power disruptions and the so-called 'freebie' row.
