Vizhinjam Port Opens New Gateway to Global Trade with EXIM Operations
Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan said the port’s AI-powered systems will speed exports to ports across all six continents.
- On Tuesday, Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan inaugurated full-scale EXIM operations at Vizhinjam International Seaport in Thiruvananthapuram, marking the facility's transformation into a global development gateway for Keralam.
- Since commercial operations began on December 3, 2024, Vizhinjam has handled more than 2.28 million TEUs and 1,100 vessels, reducing India's reliance on foreign transshipment hubs that currently handle more than 75 per cent of container cargo.
- Mission Samudra launched to harness Keralam's maritime potential, with Satheesan noting that inaugural shipments for European markets included traditional products "such as idli, sambar and pazampori."
- The 16,000-crore Phase 2 expansion will raise annual capacity to 5.7 million TEUs and add 1,200 metres of container berth, supporting industrial centers like Bengaluru, Coimbatore, and Tiruppur.
- Satheesan criticized the previous government for "failing to ensure" timely connectivity, claiming Keralam could have reaped "a hundred times" the benefits, while Opposition Leader Pinarayi Vijayan and Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal were absent from the event.
