Kenya: AI Plot to Divide Opposition Ahead of 2027 Exposed
Anthropic said the campaign used Claude to generate batches of 50 posts and remained isolated to fake accounts on one platform.
Global AI firm Anthropic released a threat intelligence report detailing an AI-driven influence operation in Kenya targeting politicians ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Identified as GTG-54004, the operation used Claude to mass-produce content, including retail marketing under the persona SHANKI/Elkins Marketer, to manufacture organic-looking engagement.
The network pushed stories claiming the United Opposition was collapsing, while targeting Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Uhuru Kenyatta and promoting Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi.
Anthropic classified the operation as Category One on its Breakout Scale, assessing that the activity remained isolated within fake accounts and failed to reach real people.
Following threat intelligence shared by OpenAI, Anthropic banned the accounts and deployed behavioral detections; the report found no evidence linking the activity to the Kenyan government.
