Kentucky turns the page: Will Stein ready after replacing the SEC's longest-tenured coach
Will Stein inherits a Kentucky roster with 45 new players after the Wildcats lost 22 players and fired Mark Stoops after 13 seasons.
Kentucky officially hired Will Stein as head coach, bringing deep Bluegrass State roots to the Wildcats. Stein expressed confidence in his ability to turn the program into big winners.
With two consecutive losing seasons, Kentucky fired former head coach Mark Stoops after 13 years of service. Going 3-13 in the Southeastern Conference was too much to overcome for the league's longest-tenured coach.
Stein faces significant roster turnover, integrating 45 new players including more than 30 via the transfer portal. He secured quarterback Kenny Minchey from Notre Dame to lead an offense featuring returning tight end Willie Rodriguez.
Emphasizing daily improvement, the new coach stated, "You have to master the mundane, the little things every single day." He aims to elevate the Wildcats from the SEC's lower ranks.
Emerging from a 5-7 record in 2025, the Wildcats face a nine-game SEC schedule this season. Upcoming major games against Alabama, LSU, and Louisville will immediately test the team's progress.
