Kentucky Derby Is Down to 19 Horses After The Puma Gets Scratched
Churchill Downs officials said the colt was out with a swollen leg from a skin infection, leaving the Derby with 19 starters.
The Puma has been scratched from the 152nd Kentucky Derby, reducing Saturday's field to 19 horses instead of the maximum 20. Churchill Downs officials cited a swollen leg from a skin infection as the reason.
This marks the fourth scratch from the Derby field this week, following Silent Tactic's withdrawal Wednesday, Fulleffort on Thursday, and Right to Party on Friday. Great White, Ocelli, and Robusta entered the field to fill spots.
Gustavo Delgado trained the horse, which opened at 10-1 odds and was bet down to 8-1 by Friday. Delgado and his son previously won the Derby with Mage in 2023.
The scratch occurred less than 12 hours before the 6:57 p.m. EDT post time, passing the deadline for Corona to draw into the field off the also-eligible list.
Renegade remains the favorite after opening on the morning line a week ago, while The Todd Pletcher-trained colt seeks to become the first to win from the inside post position in four decades.
LOUISVILLE, Kentucky, USA (AP) — The Puma was retired from the Kentucky Derby, so the 152nd edition of the race will be held on Saturday with 19 horses instead of the maximum of 20.
