Kennedy Center Honors to be held at Capital One Arena amid fight over adding Trump’s name
The move follows a closure for safety assessments and renovations, with the arena seating about 20,000 compared with 2,300 in the Opera House.
On Friday, the Kennedy Center announced the Kennedy Center Honors will be held at Capital One Arena in Washington for the first time in its nearly 50-year history, relocating from the John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts.
Following a partial ceiling collapse in the Grand Foyer last month, the board voted to close the main building. A construction consultant and the center's director consider the structure "unsafe for continued occupancy," citing risks to the public and employees.
Renovations could span two years according to the board's draft resolution. Capital One Arena accommodates around 20,000 guests compared to 2,300 in the Opera House, where the ceremony was traditionally held.
President Donald Trump claimed on Truth Social that reconstruction cannot proceed until the Circuit rules on his demand to rename the building, despite a federal judge repeatedly blocking his efforts.
With the ceremony scheduled for Dec. 7, the White House declined to comment on the venue change. The Kennedy Center will announce this year's honorees at a later date.
