Ellison, Schutz Appear to Be Set to Square Off for Minnesota Attorney General in November
Ellison held 82% of the early vote as he sought a third term in the state’s top legal office, officials said.
On Tuesday, Minnesota attorney general Keith Ellison secured a commanding lead in the DFL primary against challenger David Madgett, holding 82% of the vote with about 40% of precincts reporting statewide.
Ellison has served as the Minnesota attorney general since 2019 and is seeking a third term in the office, positioning him as the incumbent in the general election.
The position manages an operating budget of approximately $65.8 million with more than 400 employees, according to the Compensation Council, and oversees legal work for 100 state agencies and boards.
Republican candidate Ron Schutz, the lone Republican primary candidate, will likely face the incumbent Ellison in the general election in November.
As the state's chief legal officer, the attorney general defends challenges against Minnesota, serves on the State Executive Council, and handles consumer protection and antitrust laws.
