Kayaker Bitten by Shark Twice While Trying to Release It Off Malibu Coast in California, Authorities Say
Fire officials later called the incident a fishing accident after the shark bit the kayaker twice and sent him to a hospital.
On Sunday, a kayaker was bitten twice while fishing off the California coast near Malibu, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The incident occurred just after 8:30 a.m. along the West Pacific Coast Highway.
Officials say the kayaker was fishing approximately a half mile offshore when he caught the shark. While attempting to release the animal, the shark bit him and caused him to fall from his kayak.
After falling into the water, the shark bit the victim a second time, the Los Angeles County Fire Department stated. The department initially called it a shark attack but later characterized the event as a fishing accident.
Emergency personnel transported the victim to a local hospital following the morning encounter. His condition remains unknown as of Monday, according to officials who provided no additional details regarding injury severity.
