For the first time in 75 years, the world ' s worst parrot, the cacapa, reached more than 300 birds after a record breeding season caused by the mass fertility of the local New Zealand tree. On 1 September, 90 birds were officially added to the population threatened with extinction, bringing the total number to 325 – a record level since the beginning of recovery efforts.
