Injured Ellis Scores, U.S. Blanks Canada 1-0 in Men’s Soccer Friendly
The win capped a 4-0 friendly window for the United States, which used 13 debutants and teenagers to reshape the roster.
On Tuesday, teenager Justin Ellis scored in the 29th minute to give the United States a 1-0 victory over Canada in an international friendly in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Canada head coach Jesse Marsch sparked pre-match controversy by telling The Guardian that Americans are "inundated with propaganda," while US manager Mauricio Pochettino focused on integrating young talent following the team's World Cup exit.
Ellis tapped in an Alex Freeman strike in the 29th minute, while Canada's vice-captain Stephen Eustaquio suffered a collarbone injury late in the first half and did not return after halftime.
Pochettino praised the performance, stating "We made changes, we kept the level. I think we managed really well, we competed really well," as the United States completed four consecutive international friendly victories.
Both squads now shift focus to CONCACAF Nations League quarterfinals in November, with the United States facing Haiti while Canada prepares for a two-legged matchup against Guatemala starting November 13.
