Anaheim Woman Charged with Felony Animal Cruelty After Allegedly Killing Puppy by Driving Her Van over It

Police used automated license plate reader technology to identify Hahn Nguyen, who admitted abandoning Blackey and faces animal cruelty and abandonment charges.

  • Santa Ana Police arrested 75-year-old Hahn Nguyen on Thursday for intentionally killing a 9-month-old Animal named Blackey. Investigators used ALPR technology to locate Nguyen's Honda Odyssey in an Anaheim garage.
  • Surveillance footage from Sept. 8 showed Nguyen luring the Animal with food near Park Lane before running it over. Officers began investigating after a neighbor reported witnessing the incident.
  • When questioned, Nguyen admitted to owning and abandoning Blackey, telling Investigators she left the Animal at a park because it annoyed her boyfriend. ALPR technology enabled detectives to identify the vehicle and locate the suspect.
  • The Orange County District Attorney charged Nguyen with animal cruelty and abandonment. She was booked into Santa Ana Jail on Thursday and later released after posting $20,000 bail.
  • Felony animal cruelty carries a potential sentence of up to three years in county jail and up to $20,000 in fines. Nguyen is scheduled to be arraigned Nov. 2.
