JUST IN: House Of Reps Extends 2025 Capital Budget Implementation To December 31
Lawmakers said the extra time will help ministries finish capital projects and prevent abandoned infrastructure after repeated deadline extensions.
- On Tuesday, the National Assembly approved extending the implementation period for the 2025 Appropriation Act's capital component from September 30 to December 31, 2026, allowing federal agencies additional time to execute allocations.
- Lawmakers have now extended the capital implementation deadline four times, shifting the end date from December 31, 2025, through March 31, June 30, and September 30, 2026. This marks the fourth extension of the 2025 budget.
- Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele argued the extension protects ongoing public investments, while Minority Leader Abba Moro supported the measure but cautioned against blaming previous administrations. "We agree that extending the budget will enable the government to implement these projects," Moro said.
- President Bola Tinubu previously pledged in December 2025 to end overlapping budgets, assuring that all capital liabilities would be closed by March 31, 2026. The extension means the 2025 capital component remains open until December 31, 2026.
- Following the bill's passage, the House adjourned plenary until October 13, giving federal agencies three months to continue funding and implementing capital projects before the 2025 budget framework officially closes on December 31, 2026.
