Judge rules Trump unlawfully terminated legal status of migrants who used US entry app
The ruling could shield nearly 900,000 migrants from deportation after the court found DHS ended their parole without following required procedures.
- On Tuesday, U.S. District Judge Allison Burroughs ordered the Trump administration to restore legal status for thousands of migrants who used the CBP One app, ruling the Department of Homeland Security exceeded its statutory authority in blanket terminations.
- Introduced in 2023 by the Biden administration, the CBP One app allowed migrants to schedule appointments for humanitarian parole; last year, the Trump administration terminated these statuses via mass email notifications ordering affected individuals to leave.
- Roughly 900,000 migrants utilized the app to seek legal entry. Skye Perryman of Democracy Forward said the ruling is "a clear rejection of an administration that has tried to erase lawful status for hundreds of thousands of people with the click of a button."
- For many, the decision "brings long-awaited relief after months of fear and uncertainty," said Carlina Velásquez, president of the Venezuelan Association of Massachusetts; however, she noted the ruling may not guarantee permanent residency for all participants.
- The Trump administration may seek to appeal this ruling, continuing its pattern of challenging immigration policies in court. Legal battles persist over efforts to revoke Temporary Protected Status for more than 1 million people.
