Jovic 'Loses Sanity Five Times over' to Oust Eala and Book Gauff Clash

  • On Sunday, American Iva Jovic defeated Philippines star Alexandra Eala in a third-round match at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York, winning 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 after three hours and three minutes at the US Open.
  • Jovic and Eala, both rising stars, are friends and sometime doubles partners who know each other's skills well. Their Arthur Ashe Stadium debut featured 17 service breaks in 33 games, making for an intense opening battle.
  • Recovering from a second-set loss, Jovic won five of the final six games to survive the 21-year-old Eala's pressure. She finished the match when Eala netted a forehand on the final point.
  • "I'm usually not one that shows that many emotions but this one really meant a lot to me," Jovic said. She added it was "everything to have another match here at the US Open."
  • Jovic will next face Coco Gauff, the 2023 US Open and 2025 French Open champion, in the Grand Slam fourth round. Gauff advanced earlier by defeating Cristina Bucsa, 6-3, 6-4.
