Jon Cook to Leave WPP After Three Decades at VML

Cook will stay through March 2027 as WPP names Eric Campbell to lead VML and leaves the creative unit’s wider succession undecided.

  • WPP announced that Jon Cook, global CEO of VML and WPP Creative, will step down in March 2027, with Eric Campbell, North America CEO of VML, succeeding him as global CEO of VML.
  • Cook, who joined VML in 1996, transformed the Kansas City agency into a global network spanning more than 55 markets and led the 2024 merger of Wunderman Thompson and VMLY&R to form the current VML.
  • WPP CEO Cindy Rose stated Campbell has been 'central to VML's success for more than 25 years' and shaped its client relationships and culture. He currently leads VML North America and will retain his North American remit with WPP Creative.
  • To allow for a 'seamless' transition, Cook will remain in both roles until March 2027, though WPP has not yet named a successor to Cook for his wider WPP Creative responsibilities.
  • While Cook has not announced his 'next chapter,' he stated VML and WPP Creative are 'operating from positions of tremendous strength' and it is 'the right moment for other voices to lead.
