Johnny Marr Guitars From The Smiths to Go to Auction
The sale will be split into 95 lots, with proceeds going to charities including Guide Dogs for the Blind Association and the National Autistic Society.
Nearly 100 guitars from Johnny Marr's collection will go to auction at Christie's in London on September 17, including iconic instruments used on The Smiths' tracks and Billie Eilish's James Bond theme.
While writing his 2023 book Marr's Guitars, Marr first considered selling the instruments, finding the prospect of them returning to storage "very weird." He prefers the guitars continue inspiring other musicians rather than sitting unused.
The 95 lots include a 1982 Rickenbacker 330 Jetglo and a 1960 Cherry Red Gibson ES-355. Marr will donate 100% of the hammer price from 10 lots to the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association and the National Autistic Society.
Highlights will go on display in New York from June 25 to July 1, before returning to Christie's London headquarters for a free pre-sale exhibition from September 9 to 16, offering public access to the instruments.
Set for release on October 2, The Age Of Everything is Marr's fifth solo album via BMG, marking a new chapter as he promotes his latest studio project alongside the auction.
Johnny Marr's guitars will go under the hammer this summer. Auction house Christie's announced this on Monday. The instruments each have an estimated value of tens of thousands of euros.
