John Shipley: Byron Buxton’s separate peace with Twins’ new direction
Buxton said he likes the Twins’ day-to-day focus but still doubts the franchise’s direction after a 10-player trade-deadline purge.
Minnesota Twins veteran Byron Buxton expressed continued dissatisfaction with the franchise's direction following the trade deadline purge of 10 players last July.
Losers of 13 of their past 17 games, the Twins adopted an aggressive, small-ball approach despite recent struggles. Buxton supports the strategy, saying, "Play the game the right way, the hard way; run the bases, take the extra 90 feet."
Buxton met with owner Pohlad and new manager Derek Shelton to discuss the team's strategy. He emphasized everyone is on the same page, though he has not done a 180 on his concerns.
Roster challenges complicate playoff aspirations: pitcher Pablo Lopez is on the shelf while pitcher Joe Ryan deals with elbow soreness, hampering the team's winning chances.
In the fifth season of his $15 million annual contract, Buxton acknowledges the team remains far from a World Series title, particularly with an expected work stoppage in 2027.
