John Lewis names new boss as Peter Ruis to step down
Will Kernan will take over as John Lewis managing director as the partnership seeks a return to profit after an £800 million investment plan.
The John Lewis Partnership announced that managing director Peter Ruis will step down in September "to pursue new projects," with Will Kernan succeeding him in mid-September to lead the department store chain.
Since January 2024, Ruis led a major turnaround program, reintroducing the Never Knowingly Undersold price promise and overseeing the start of an £800 million store investment plan to modernize the business.
Previously leading retailers River Island and The White Company, Kernan has served on the partnership's board for three years, bringing extensive retail experience to the transition.
Collaborating with John Lewis Partnership chairman Jason Tarry, Kernan aims to return the group to profitability despite challenging consumer conditions while maintaining brand loyalty.
With 36 shops across the UK, Kernan stated, "We have significant headroom for growth," as he prepares to lead digital and service initiatives ahead of the peak Christmas trading season.
