Jeremy Hansen becomes first non-NASA astronaut to receive U.S. Space Medal of Honor
On Aug. 28, 2026, Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen prepares to receive the Congressional Space Medal of Honor, becoming the first non-NASA astronaut to receive the award.
President Donald Trump is expected to present the medal to Hansen and his Artemis crewmates during a ceremony at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston.
In total, 30 astronauts have received the Congressional Space Medal, including 17 honored posthumously after dying during missions, underscoring the award's rarity.
Reflecting on the Honor, Hansen stated, "It is pride for the grit that our families had," while crediting the NASA team that supported their mission.
During the Artemis mission in April, Hansen made history as the first Canadian to venture beyond low Earth orbit, marking international cooperation in space exploration.
