JD Vance Says Iran War Could Enter ‘Much Different Phase’ Within Months
Vance said the administration is focused on containing Iran’s remaining military capacity and protecting shipping after U.S. strikes destroyed key weapons systems, officials said.
Vice President JD Vance announced on Monday that the U.S. conflict with Iran will enter a "much different phase in a couple of months," shifting from direct strikes toward long-term containment of Tehran's military capabilities.
Vance explained that the initial phase destroying Iran's nuclear program and conventional military is complete, requiring the administration to pivot toward preventing reconstruction while maintaining stability across the Middle East.
Military operations have resulted in 18 U.S. servicemember deaths and cost taxpayers $33.4 billion since February, while traffic through the Strait of Hormuz recovered to over 50% of normal levels despite persistent disruptions.
President Donald Trump predicted the war will end "immediately after the election," though the House voted 220-204 on Tuesday to approve a war powers resolution seeking to terminate unauthorized U.S. military operations against Iran.
The Memorandum of Understanding with Pakistani negotiators, initiated in mid-June, established a cease-fire and framework for disengagement procedures, providing a diplomatic foundation layered beneath the current containment strategy.
