Japan to survey animal cafes for first time over welfare and disease concerns
The survey will examine animal welfare, hygiene and public health risks at cafes that keep exotic species and lack specific standards, officials said.
- Japan launched its first nationwide survey of animal cafes this month to address growing concerns over animal welfare, hygiene, and public health in the lightly regulated sector.
- While exotic animal cafes remain popular tourist attractions, Environment Ministry official Takuya Ishikawa noted Japan lacks specific standards governing the handling of many exotic species.
- Researchers visiting 25 cafes found more than 1,700 animals on display, with 27% being threatened species; more than 90% of locations displayed animals posing injury risks, and some tested positive for EHEC.
- "Japan is clearly lagging behind when it comes to regulation," said Syaina Nozaki, manager of Owl Otter Cafe in Kamakura. The government also plans a public awareness campaign on exotic animal interaction risks.
- The assessment will also include cafes housing domesticated animals like cats and dogs, ensuring comprehensive safety protocol evaluation across the entire animal cafe industry.
