Punch, a juvenile Japanese macaque, is forming social bonds and relying less on a stuffed toy after zoo staff removed aggressive troop members to aid his integration.
- A TikTok by Overtime shows Punch, a Japanese macaque, cuddling and kissing a female macaque, capturing the pair sitting close and playing together on camera.
- Earlier this month, the zoo temporarily removed some higher-ranking troop members who had demonstrated aggression more frequently to reduce conflict in the enclosure.
- Zookeeper Shunpei Miyakoshi told CNN that Punch has found new friends and is relying less on the orangutan stuffed toy given as a substitute mother.
- Miyakoshi said Punch now hugs and plays with other monkeys, marking developmental milestones that contrast sharply with earlier clips showing him being tackled and chased away.
- Staff noted that Japanese macaques tend to be physical because they lack language, and widely shared videos of rough encounters account for only minutes of Punch's day.
