James Cleverly resigns from shadow cabinet to run for mayor of London
The former foreign secretary will seek the Conservative nomination and challenge Sadiq Khan in 2028, as he says London needs a champion.
- Conservative MP Sir James Cleverly resigned as shadow housing secretary to run for London Mayor, writing, "I am putting myself forward to be the Conservative candidate for mayor of London."
- Cleverly accused Labour Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan of using city hall as a "springboard into No 10" and allowing its reputation to "slip." He vowed to "rebuild" London's standing as a global business hub.
- Telling Tory leader Kemi Badenoch of his decision, Cleverly said, "I must be free to speak about every aspect of London's future" and concentrate fully on winning the race.
- Although Cleverly declared his candidacy, he must still compete for the Conservative nomination; Tory Westminster councillor Festus Akinbusoye is expected to announce his own campaign in the coming weeks.
- The mayoral election is scheduled for May 2028, with Sir Sadiq Khan yet to confirm whether he will seek a fourth term against the eventual Conservative challenger.
