Tens of thousands of Czechs gathered on Sunday 1 February in Prague to support pro-Ukrainian President Petr Pavel in the face of the new government led by billionaire Andrej Babis. The Head of State, whose powers are limited by the Constitution, is now engaged in an open conflict with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, leader of a Eurosceptic formation called the Motorists, whose methods are already strongly contested.
Tens of thousands of Czechs have gathered in central Prague to express their support for President Petr Pavel, who has found himself in a dispute with the government of Prime Minister Andrej Babiš over his refusal to appoint Filip Turek of the Motorists party, who is under investigation for rape and domestic violence, as environment minister.
At three o'clock in the afternoon on Sunday, a demonstration in support of President Petr Pavel broke out on Old Town Square and in the lower part of Wenceslas Square in Prague. The association Million Moments for Democracy called it because of SMS messages from Foreign Minister Petr Macinka (Motoristé), which the president described as an attempt at blackmail.
