'It has to get better': Edmonton Oilers look for ways to improve defence
The Oilers have conceded 25 goals in their last five games, with defensive breakdowns and inconsistent penalty killing contributing to their struggles, coach Kris Knoblauch said.
- On Saturday in Edmonton the Edmonton Oilers lost 7-3 to the Minnesota Wild, with Connor Ingram making seven relief saves and Tristan Jarry pulled in the second period after allowing five goals on 20 shots.
- Edmonton’s penalty kill has been inconsistent, allowing six goals on 14 penalties over the past four games and conceding many Grade A chances, players say.
- On special teams the Wild scored early after Curtis Lazar's high-sticking penalty, with Quinn Hughes feeding Joel Eriksson Ek for a 1-1 tie and a rebound leading to Kiril Kaprizov's 2-2 goal.
- Kris Knoblauch said the Oilers need to play better defensively and address the quality of chances allowed, emphasizing 'You can't do that,' in response to recent mistakes.
- The report published Feb. 1, 2026, highlights standings pressure as the Oilers sit second in the Pacific, tied on points with the Golden Knights but have played two more games.
