Israel Hits Key Lebanon Bridge, Orders Homes Destroyed
Israel has killed more than 1,000 people and displaced over one million in southern Lebanon through strikes targeting bridges and homes to stop Hezbollah's movements.
- On Sunday, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz ordered the military to destroy all crossings over the Litani River and Israeli forces struck a main bridge on Lebanon's coastal highway linking southern and central Lebanon.
- Amid the widening regional war, earlier this month Katz warned Lebanon it would face infrastructure damage and territorial losses unless Hezbollah was disarmed, framing the later orders.
- Lebanon's Health Ministry says strikes killed more than 1,000, displacing more than one million, while three bridges were destroyed in southern Lebanon in the last 10 days.
- Ramzi Kaiss of Human Rights Watch warned 'If all these bridges are struck, and the region that is south of the Litani becomes isolated from the rest of the country, then the civilian harm is going to be so immense that you have a humanitarian catastrophe — as people still living in the south won't be able to access food, medicine and other basic needs', and the UN human rights office cautioned some strikes may amount to war crimes.
- Diplomatic pressure mounted as countries urged restraint after French Foreign Affairs Minister Jean-Noël Barrot met Israel's Gideon Sa'ar on Friday; an Israeli civilian and two soldiers were killed.
