Israeli forces seized most of over 40 vessels and detained hundreds of activists in a bid to uphold Gaza blockade, triggering widespread European protests and strikes.
- On 2 October Israeli armed forces had seized the majority of the Global Sumud Flotilla after intercepting over 40 vessels in international waters at around 6pm GMT, detaining hundreds.
- The flotilla was attempting to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza, but Israel would not allow its naval blockade to be broken and ordered activists to turn back.
- Among those seized were Greta Thunberg, Ada Colau, an Irish senator, and many political, trade union figures, while Mandla Mandela was also detained.
- Thousands spontaneously flooded Italian streets and blockaded transport hubs in Rome, Naples, Milan, Genoa, Florence and Bologna, while USB and the five million-strong CGIL called a general strike for Friday October 3.
- The flotilla has become a focal point of international solidarity with protests across Turkey, Belgium, Germany, Spain, and France as activists demand boycotts and sanctions while Gaza's death toll exceeds 65,000.
