- On Aug. 1, 2008, Israeli naval commandos assassinated Gen. Muhammad Suleiman, a senior adviser to Syrian President Bashar Assad, at his vacation home in Tartus. Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert confirmed the operation in his new book.
- Olmert described Suleiman as Assad's "closest confidant" who managed Syria's covert nuclear reactor project in Deir Ezzor. Suleiman also served as a key liaison between Assad and the Iran-backed Lebanese group Hezbollah.
- Under cover of darkness, commandos positioned themselves 150 meters away from the terrace where Suleiman and his guests were seated. They fired three bullets, striking him in the head and neck before escaping undetected by sea.
- Israel was long suspected of the assassination but never publicly acknowledged responsibility. A 2015 U.S. intelligence document leaked by The Intercept previously hinted that the elite Shayetet 13 unit conducted the operation.
- This admission provides the first high-profile confirmation of the strike, arriving years after Assad's government was overthrown in December 2024. Syrian officials had previously blamed an internal power struggle for Suleiman's death.
