Asteroid Bennu Formed From A Mixture Of Inner And Outer Solar System Material Potentially Stirred Up By Jupiter
One of the few asteroids we've managed to sample, Bennu contains a curious mix of cosmic dust that could provide insights into how our own planet formed.
Did Jupiter Help Shape Asteroid Bennu?
A small sample from asteroid Bennu is changing scientists’ ideas about where it formed. New measurements suggest that Bennu’s ancient material came together near a boundary where water could freeze in the young solar system. Jupiter may have helped decide which dust particles reached that region. NASA’s OSIRIS-REx mission brought roughly 120 grams of material […]
The asteroid Bennu was formed from a mixture of materials from the inner and outer parts of the solar system with the participation of Jupiter.
New analyses of samples of the Bennu asteroid reveal that its parent body was formed some 4.5 billion years ago, near the ice line. In this region, materials from the internal and external areas of the Solar System blended, while the ice helped to add the dust that gave rise to Bennu.
