Iryna Zarutska's family files wrongful death lawsuit alleging no security guard was on train
The suit says city and transit security ignored known crime risks and failed to use barriers, fare checks and adequate staffing on the Blue Line.
- On Friday, the family of Iryna Zarutska filed a lawsuit in Superior Court against the city of Charlotte and Professional Security Services, alleging security lapses contributed to her fatal stabbing on the Lynx Blue Line one year ago.
- The lawsuit claims Charlotte and PSS failed to implement safety measures including "fare enforcement, physical access barriers, adequate staffing, effective security deployment, monitoring, and passenger warnings" despite prior violent crime reports on the Blue Line.
- A state auditor's report cited in the filing found "limited interaction between CATS and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department," noting no direct connection between the Real Time Crime Center and transit surveillance cameras at the time of the killing.
- Suspect DeCarlos Brown remains jailed without bond after being deemed mentally incompetent to stand trial; attorney Lauren Newton stated the lawsuit seeks accountability, adding, "I want to be able to ride that light rail again with my children."
- The city of Charlotte is not commenting on the pending litigation, though officials and PSS must formally respond in court in the coming weeks as the case proceeds through the legal system.
