Irish musician Eithne Vallely, 81, dies in NI collision
Police said the 81-year-old fiddle player died at the scene after being struck by a lorry, and witnesses are being sought.
Renowned fiddle player Eithne Vallely, 81, died on Friday morning after being struck by a lorry on the Portadown Road in Armagh; police confirmed she was pronounced dead at the scene.
A native of Donegal, Vallely made Armagh her home for nearly 60 years and founded the Armagh Pipers Club with her husband, Brian, which grew to teach up to 200 students annually.
Sinn Fein MP Daire Hughes praised Vallely as a "giant of Irish culture," while SDLP Armagh Councillor Thomas O'Hanlon called her death "simply devastating news," highlighting her extraordinary contribution to the city's cultural life.
Detective Inspector Stewart from the Police Service's Collision Investigation Unit appealed for witnesses, directing the public to call 101 or Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111, quoting reference 247 21/08/26.
The Armagh Pipers Club expressed "great sorrow" at losing its Director of Music, noting Vallely brought music into children's lives for six decades, establishing a lasting traditional music legacy across Ireland.
