Jones Wants Host City Newcastle to Rally Around Japan During World Cup
The match will be Japan's second Nations Championship game and the first neutral international played in Australia since the COVID-19 pandemic.
On Saturday, July 11, Ireland will face Japan in an historic Nations Championship Test at McDonald Jones Stadium in Newcastle, Australia.
Rugby Australia confirmed the match is the first neutral international test hosted in Australia since the COVID-19 pandemic, part of the inaugural Nations Championship featuring the top 12 nations.
IRFU President John O'Driscoll said, "We are hugely excited to face Japan in what will be our second game of the forthcoming Nations Championship," noting this is their 12th meeting.
This game serves as preparation for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, which will open in Newcastle, with Japan Rugby Football Union president Masato Tsuchida saying fans will be "excited to watch the match at this magnificent stadium."
Historically, Ireland holds a strong record, winning 10 of 11 tests against Japan dating back to 1991, with the teams most recently meeting in Dublin in November where the hosts prevailed 41-10.
