Iraq starts investigations into IS group detainees moved from Syrian camps
Iraq's Supreme Judicial Council has started counter-terrorism investigations for 1,387 IS detainees transferred from Syria, following a US-led operation moving up to 7,000 prisoners.
- On Monday, Iraq's judiciary announced it has begun investigations into 1,387 Daesh detainees recently transferred from Syria as part of a US operation.
- On June 21, US Central Command announced it began transferring up to 7,000 ISIS suspects from Syria to Iraq after Syrian government forces seized Kurdish-held territory.
- Under the supervision of the head of Iraq's Supreme Judicial Council, several counter-terrorism judges started investigating detainees, including Syrians, Iraqis and Europeans, held in al-Hol and al-Roj camps.
- Iraqi courts have a history of handing down hundreds of death sentences and life terms to terrorism convicts, while CENTCOM said the transfers aim to keep terrorists in secure detention facilities.
- At the time of the 2024 report, Amnesty International said the SDF was responsible for torture and `mass death` in facilities holding 56,000 people, including 30,000 children.
