Iraq says 40 daily Iranian flights cleared to fly to and from Najaf
The agreement follows a U.S. waiver and limits service to pilgrim travel, while excluding Mahan Air over American security concerns.
On Oct 2, The Prime Minister's Office announced that Iranian airlines, excluding Mahan Air, are permitted 40 daily flights to and from Najaf International Airport following a suspension due to sanctions.
Iraq halted flights to and from Iran last week to comply with sanctions; Reuters reported earlier that Treasury granted a one-month waiver to allow flights for Shi Muslim religious pilgrims.
The Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control accuses Mahan Air of transporting Iran's Revolutionary Guards personnel, weapons, and drones, while the Office authorized Iraqi Airways to operate services under strict restrictions on routes, travelers, and cargo.
Al-Zaidi welcomed the agreement, saying it facilitates "the movement of passengers and pilgrims arriving in or departing from Iraq," as The Prime Minister noted the importance of diplomatic channels for humanitarian needs.
