Iran’s top negotiator Ghalibaf, FM Araghchi arrive in Doha for talks on possible deal with US
The delegation is discussing a 14-point draft that would reopen the Strait of Hormuz and release frozen Iranian assets, officials said.
On Monday, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrived in Doha to discuss a possible US-Iran agreement aimed at ending their three-year conflict, with talks focused on the Strait of Hormuz and Iran's highly enriched uranium stockpile.
Pakistan's mediation efforts in recent weeks have facilitated the diplomatic push, though both Washington and Tehran have played down expectations of an immediate breakthrough in their three-year conflict.
Senior Iranian diplomat Hossein Nooshabadi said the draft agreement currently contains no commitments regarding Iran's nuclear programme; instead, nuclear negotiations could take place during a proposed 60-day negotiation period following an initial agreement.
Iran's foreign ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei acknowledged progress on a 14-point memorandum while cautioning that final approval remains distant, requiring clearance from Iran's Supreme National Security Council and Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei.
President Donald Trump conditioned any nuclear agreement on being great and meaningful, warning Washington would walk away if terms fell short, and rejected the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action as a direct path to nuclear weapons for Iran.
